This blog could make some of you mad and then some of you may agree. I don't really care either way. Its how I feel and I am all about speaking my mind. On April 18 2011, Cherryvale held the Victory Games for the Special Needs Children in our county (not just independence). However there were several schools in the Independence District that participated.
I am outraged that the Independence Reporter did not cover this event. I didn't expect a whole page layout dedicated to it but a little recognition for these special students would have been nice. I notice when it comes to sports especially in the Independence area the Reporter doesn't hesitate to tell you all about this great and wonderful team that made the playoffs or whatever the greatness was that occurred. I bet you there are no special needs children participating in those sports due to their disabilities. But they are important and they deserve just much coverage as the normal "sport" kids do.
While being at the Victory Games that my special disabled child participated in the Montgomery County Chronicle editor and photographer was there. Not only did he take several pictures but my son made the front page with a caption that told all about the Victory Games and also had a two page layout about the games on their e-edition.
Its funny to me to see where the community really stands when it comes to what is important. If you are rich or play sports and are "normal" the Reporter will cover all those details but if you are disabled or poor screw you I guess.
Thank you Montgomery County Chronicle you will always have a faithful reader of your paper from here on out.
Good for you for drawing attention to this! I have felt the same way before..wondering why such a beautiful event isn't flooded with news reporters. I can imagine if they went to one Victory Game, they would be moved to tears and feel changed and motivated to cover from then on out. Hopefully some changes can be made! These kids are miracles in action! :)
